How to facilitate a Small Group
Leading a Bible Study with Confidence
Leading a discussion-based Bible Study is easier than you think
Embarking on the journey of leading a Bible study group is an enriching experience, and contrary to common belief, it's easier than you think! The key lies not in being the most knowledgeable or the most vocal, but in fostering a circle where everyone feels encouraged to share and explore their faith journey together—all rooted in God’s Word.
The Art of Asking Good Questions
The most effective leaders are those who understand the power of a good question. The common misconception is that a leader needs to dominate the conversation with their knowledge and insights. This is far from the truth. Your effectiveness as a discussion leader is better measured by the quality of the questions you ask rather than the quantity of your input.
Good questions are those that are:
Relevant: They connect personally with the group members, making the discussion more meaningful.
Driving Biblical Truth: They should always lead back to the core teachings of the Bible.
On Topic: Stay focused on the theme of the discussion to maintain a coherent and directed discussion.
Preparing Well
Your preparation goes beyond just knowing the session content. Spend time contemplating how to personalize the content to your group's unique dynamics. Understand your group members — their personalities, needs, and spiritual growth paths. Remember, the goal is not to get through every question in the Study Guide. Instead, spend your prep time choosing questions that will spark the most engaging and helpful discussions based on the needs of your group.
And don't be annoyed if two or three questions takes up your entire time! Your role is to guide—not force—the flow of conversation.
Setting Up for Success
Set your physical space thoughtfully. Aim to arrange seating in a circle, fostering a sense of equality and open communication. Remember that "Life change happens in the circle," emphasizing the transformative power of shared experiences and biblical discussions in a close-knit setting.
Content and Structure
First Session: Start with the 30-minute Series Preface to set the stage. Discussion reactions and group goals, hand out books (or provide digital download links) and establish your schedule group meetings.
Subsequent Sessions: Encourage members to read or listen to the week’s chapter. Begin each meeting with the video corresponding to the chapter (each being 6 minutes or less).
Following the chapter’s Discussion Guide, select the appropriate questions for your group. Do not expect to have time for every question each week —each leader/facilitator should choose the ones to be used. See “Preparing Well” above.
Save an appropriate amount of time to finish each session with a final word, summarizing the discussion and helpful truths and insights shared. Record prayer requests and lift one another up.
Remember, facilitating a Bible study group is about creating an environment that promotes healthy discussion rooted in biblical content. Your role is less about imparting knowledge and more about guiding your members through their spiritual journey. With these tips in mind, you're well-equipped to lead a fulfilling and impactful Small Group.
